Defense lifts Lakeland over Rockford

Athletics - posted on 12/15/2007

A solid defensive effort propelled the Muskies to a 62-48 win over Northern Athletics Conference foe Rockford College on Saturday in Rockford, Ill.

The Regents (0-7, 0-4 NAC) went up 2-0 to start the contest, but the Muskies (5-4, 4-1 NAC) took over less than a minute later and built up a 30-27 lead by halftime. In the second half, the Muskies' defense dictated the game and Lakeland grabbed 23 of its 41 rebounds.

"We worked on our defense this week in practice and it paid off for us," said Lakeland head coach Kyle Brumett. "We weren't as good offensively today and not as up-tempo, but were a lot better defensively."

Junior forward Peter Worth had a stellar game, leading the Muskies with 14 rebounds and five assists, as well as adding seven points.

"Pete had an outstanding game," said Brumett. "With a lot of guys injured he really stepped up for us."

Three Muskies scored in double digits. Senior Kris Saiberlich paced the Muskies with 18 points, senior Aaron Regal added 12 points and  nine rebounds and freshman Trevor McKown scored 11.

"Aaron and Kris combined to go 10 of 11 from the free throw line," said Brumett. "Trevor also played well."

Freshman Khendal Andrews scored eight points for the Muskies in the second half.

"Khendal gave us a nice lift off the bench and had a great second half," said Brumett.

Lakeland returns to action Tuesday as they face MacMurray College. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Jacksonville, Ill.
