The Lakeland College women's volleyball team (6-7 overall) split its matches in the first day of play at the Wheaton College Tournament on Friday, Sept. 21, in Wheaton, Ill. First the squad dropped a match to nationally-ranked Carthage, 3-1, then took the second match, 3-0 over University of Chicago.
Although the Muskies improved upon last weekend's effort against No. 6 Carthage, strongly taking game two, 30-18, the squad was unable to produce that kind of momentum in the other three games of the match, resulting in scores in Carthage's favor, 30-22, 30-25 and 30-14.
Junior right side hitter Heidi Kramer led the squad with 12 kills, followed by sophomore outside hitter Brittanie Paulus with nine kills and 12 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Tonia Strebelinski shouldered the majority of the load in the back row with a team-high 14 digs, while junior setter Jessica Sparling racked up 37 assists.
However, Lakeland was able to bounce back to snag a commanding victory in its second match of the day against University of Chicago, 3-0 (30-22, 30-17, 30-21).
Paulus led the Muskies' on both offense and defense against Chicago with 13 kills and nine digs, while senior outside hitter Ashley Domask and Kramer eached tallied five kills apiece.
The Muskies will continue match play at the Wheaton Tournament on Saturday, beginning with host Wheaton at 10 a.m. followed by North Central at 12:30 p.m.
