Women's Volleyball Faces Tough Competition at UW-W Tourney

The Lakeland College women's volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference matches to UW-Platteville and UW-Oshkosh, 3-1, on Friday, Oct. 26, during the first day of the UW-Whitewater Tournament in Whitewater, Wis.

The Muskies (19-13 overall) got off to a good start against Platteville, taking the first game of the match, 30-27. However, the Pioneers revived to win the remaining three games of the match, 30-28, 30-20, 30-28.

Despite the loss, Lakeland produced a strong showing on offense, as sophomore outside hitter Brittanie Paulus led the team with 15 kills followed by senior middle hitter Shelly Bruni and sophomore middle hitter Kim Linger with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Bruni also hit an impressive .522 for the match.

Senior defensive specialist Rachel Young was solid on defense with a team-high 12 digs, followed by Paulus with 10. Junior setter Jessica Sparling was also a key contributor with 46 assists.

Lakeland was also able to take a game in a tough match with Oshkosh, ranked ninth in the nation, as the squad came alive in the second game to win, 30-23. However, the one win wasn't enough, as the Muskies dropped the other three games of the match, 30-20, 30-21 and 30-24.

Linger led another fairly strong offensive drive with 11 kills, followed by Paulus with 10. Paulus was also an anchor in the backcourt with a team-high 25 digs, followed by Young with 16. Linger also led the squad's blocking efforts with eight block assists.

Lakeland will continue match play at the UW-W Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 27, with another pair of matches. First the Muskies will face Simpson at 11 a.m. followed by a key match with Steven's Institute, ranked No. 17 in the nation, at 3 p.m.
