Despite dropping the third game of its match with an aggressive UW-Whitewater squad, 23-30, the Lakeland College men's volleyball team persevered to take the match, 3-1, for its fifth-straight Wisconsin Volleyball Conference match win at Whitewater on Wednesday, March 12.
The Muskies (30-5, 10-1 WVC) were forced to battle throughout the match with a much-improved Warhawk squad, as the first, second and fourth games of the match were close as well, with scores of 30-28, 33-31 and 30-25.
However, the efforts of outside hitter Matt Martin and senior middle hitter Avdo Omerbegovic were vital to the Muskies' eventual success, as Martin led the offense and defense with 22 kills and 16 digs while Omerbegovic tallied a team-high nine blocks and also chipped in seven kills. Freshman utility Chris Kubacki also stepped up big-time, dishing out 40 assists to help guide the Muskies' attack while also recording 14 digs.
Lakeland will conclude its regular-season WVC schedule with its last, and perhaps biggest, home match of the season against UW-Oshkosh on Thursday, March 13. Match time is set for 8 p.m. in the Woltzen Gymnasium.
