Athletics - posted on 3/16/2008

The Lakeland College softball team began its season with a 1-3 record during the first four games of its spring break tournament in Tucson, Ariz., against tough competition on March 15-16.

The Muskies defeated Amherst College (Mass.), 5-1, in the first game of the day on Sunday, highlighted by a three-run home run by sophomore pitcher Sara Roberts for the first home run of her career.

Lakeland's three losses began with their first two games on Saturday as the Muskies fell to Jamestown College (ND), 9-1, and Eastern Connecticut State, 8-0.

Lakeland also had a tough time against UW-La Crosse during its second game of the day on Sunday, falling 18-4. Roberts picked up the loss on the mound in that game, with sophomore Cassie Felton and freshman Kayla VandeWettering pitching a few innings in relief. VandeWettering also hit her first collegiate career home run against the Eagles.

"We're doing prety well so far even though we look a little sluggish at times," said head coach Chad Buchmann. "We still have a lot of games left to play, so hopefully we'll see some improvement."

The Muskies will continue tournament play with two games on both Monday, March 17, and Wednesday, March 19, to wrap up the Tucson Tournament. On Monday, they will face Augsburg (Minn.) at 10:30 a.m. before clashing with UW-Stevens Point at 1 p.m.
