Lakeland volleyball comes away 5-3 in MIVA tourney

The Lakeland College men's volleyball team competed in the MIVA Championships with an overall successful 5-3 record.  The squad made it to the finals, but was defeated by University of Illinois (25-27, 21-25).  This brings the team's overall record to 36-8. 

In the first day of the tournament, the team defeated UW-Madison (25-11, 24-26, 15-13) and Ohio Northern (31-29, 22-25, 15-9), but fell to University of Illinois (18-25, 22-25) and Grand Valley State (25-20, 22-25, 13-15). 

On day two of the tournament, the squad defeated Cincinnati, UW-Oshkosh in the quarterfinals (25-20, 25-22), and Notre Dame in the semifinals (25-15, 25-19) before falling to Illinois in the finals for the secod time in the tournament. 

On day one of the tourney, many key players came forth to contribute to the team's overall success.  During the match against UW-Madison, outside hitter Matt Martin contributed to the win with 11 kills and eight digs, while Jared Rohland achieved eight blocks.  In the Ohio Northern match, Jared Rohland contributed 14 kills, four blocks, and four digs, and Matt Clemens also assisted the team with 37 assists, 11 digs, and two blocks.  Against University of Illinois, Matt Martin was a big help to the team with 10 kills and five digs, and Avdo Omerbegovic also made major contributions with five kills and four blocks.  In the match rivaling Grand Valley State, Matt Clemens again stepped up to become a key player with 30 assists, six digs, and five blocks, and Devin Doyle also helped with five kills, four digs, and three blocks.

During the second day of the tournament against Cincinnati, Andrew Lietz contributed to the win with 10 kills, three digs, and two blocks.  Matt Martin helped with contributing six kills and nine digs.  Against UW-Oshkosh, Joe Julkowkski assisted the team with six kills, three digs, and four blocks, while Jared Rohland achieved five kills and five blocks.  During the match versus Notre Dame, Joe Julkowski again became a main contributor, along with Matt Martin.  Julkowski achieved seven kills and five digs, and Martin had seven kills and four digs.  In the match against University of Illinois, Avdo Omerbegovic helped the team with five kills and two digs, and Chris Kubacki contributed five kills and two blocks. 

Clemens and Julkowski were named to the first team All-Midwest 10 team for their efforts while Martin was an honorable mention selection.

The Muskies will finish up their Wisconsin Volleyball Conference schedule with the WVC Tournament on April 4-5 at UW-La Crosse.  Match times TBA.
