The Muskies came out firing on all cylinders in the first game against Dominican University on Sunday. The Muskies defeated Dominican in the first game 6-0 and lost the second game 3-2 in the seventh inning.
In the first game, freshmen pitcher Rachel Griesbach was on her game. Griesbach struck out a season-high seven batters in the first game and allowed only three hits. She also pitched the second game and picked up another three strikeouts while allowing six hits.
Val Barlett reached base three of her four appearances in the first game, which helped start things off for Lakeland. Katie Yeager (soph.-catcher) and Alli Weiss (soph.-DP) combined for three of the teams seven timely hits. Yeager had a triple and scored twice.
“Rae was really working at a good pace and hitting her spots,” Lakeland coach Chad Buchmann said. “The offense put some runs up for her and she grew stronger with each inning. It was nice to see the smiles on the ladies faces, as we put it together.”
The second game saw good pitching but two un-timely errors by the Muskies’ defense. Dominican scored two of its three runs off the Muskies two errors.
Heading onto the seventh down 3-1, Lakeland’s Monica Hetzel, Val Barlett and Elisa Waltz each had consecutive singles. Hetzel scored on a Waltz sacrifice base hit leaving Barlett at third and Waltz at second. Pam Valukas’ sacrifice bunt caused out number two, and Barlett was thrown out that plate for the final out.
“We had the situation we wanted and it didn’t work out,” Buchman said. “The ladies learned a lot about playing the road this weekend and I think it will help us out as we endure a rough road heavy schedule.”
Pitcher Rachel Griesbach is now 2-5, Jenny Zimmerman is 2-2 and Kendall Weber is 0-1.
The 4-8 Muskies begin conference play Tuesday April 5th at Lakeland, the first of three much-needed home dates during the week. Thursday April 7 the Muskies host Ripon College at 3 p.m. and April 9 they host MSOE at 1 p.m.
