Muskies Split NAC Opener with Marian

Athletics - posted on 4/2/2008

After a two-week hiatus from playing games due to poor weather and field conditions, the Lakeland College softball team finally opened its Northern Athletics Conference schedule with a doubleheader at Marian College, splitting the games on Wednesday, April 2.

The Muskies (2-8, 1-1 NAC) shut out the Sabres in the first game, 5-0, thanks in part to the pitching talents of sophomore Sara Roberts, who allowed just five hits to pick up the win on the mound. The second game was a different matter altogether, as the Muskies endured 15 hits from Marian to fall, 15-8, with sophomore Cassie Felton suffering the loss on the mound.

Although the first game was caught in a scoreless stalemate until the fifth inning, sophomore second baseman KC Blahnik opened the Muskies' offensive floodgates with a triple to jumpstart her teammates. Seniors Allison Lock, Kourtney Peters and Elisa Waltz all followed with singles to bring the squad up to five runs for the inning alone, capping off all scoring for the game.

Lakeland finished the game with nine hits led by Lock with three while Roberts struck out two in the seven inning effort.

Marian got its bats going in game two, resulting in a 9-3 score in the Sabres' favor at the end of the third inning. Lakeland countered with a four-run fourth inning on three hits, including singles from senior Pam Valukas and sophomore Chelsea Coenen and a double from freshman Sam Shepeck. However, the Sabres countered with six more runs during the remainder of the game to maintain the advantage.

Blahnik helped lead the offensive drive in game two with two hits, including a solo home run in the first inning, while Coenen and Shepeck also recorded two hits apiece. Felton threw three innings, giving up 10 runs on eight hits. Senior Jenny Zimmerman came in to pitch the final four innings in relief, giving up five runs on seven hits and tallying two strikeouts.

The Muskies will continue their NAC schedule with a doubleheader against Edgewood College on Thursday, April 3. Game start time is set for 3 p.m. Site TBA.
