The Lakeland College baseball team scored its first Northern Athletics Conference win of the season in game two of the squad's doubleheader with Wisconsin Lutheran, 9-5, after falling in the first game, 17-10, on Thursday, April 3, at home.
Senior Nate Brusewitz picked up the win on the mound in the second game, pitching into the sixth inning and allowing just four hits with six strikeouts. Freshman Mike Ruzek came in to close the game, shutting out the Warriors and tallying three strikeouts.
The second inning proved to be big for the Muskies (2-10, 1-3 NAC), as the squad scored five runs to take a 6-0 lead. Freshman left-fielder Jeremy Meier, sophomore centerfielder Jacob Heinemeyer and junior first baseman Adam Brown all tallied key singles to help give the Muskies the advantage. The Warriors closed the gap at the top of the seventh inning with four runs to hang just one run behind the Muskies at 6-5, but three Lakeland runs at the bottom of the seventh, including a 2 RBI single by freshman right-fielder Jeremy Williams, helped put the game out of reach.
In game one both teams struggled with miscues, racking up a collective 13 errors in the game. However, neither team seemed to have much trouble on offense with Wisconsin Lutheran tallying 15 hits to Lakeland's 12. Freshman catcher Dave Novak led the Muskies with three hits on five at-bats followed by senior third baseman and closer Adam Hablewitz with two hits and three runs.
Freshman pitcher Alex Ackerman suffered the loss on the mound in three innings of work, allowing 11 hits and 10 runs with three strikeouts. Junior reliever Mike Phillips and Hablewitz also pitched in, with Phillips throwing four innings while Hablewitz threw one.
The Muskies will continue NAC play at home with a doubleheader against Maranatha Baptist Bible College on Saturday, April 5. Game start time is set for 12 p.m.
