Lakeland hands Marian its first NAC baseball loss

The Lakeland baseball team shrugged off a loss in game one and rebounded to hand host Marian its first Northern Athletics Conference loss in the second game of a doubleheader in Fond du Lac on Sunday.

The Muskies improved to 5-10, 4-4 in the NAC, with a 6-4 win in the second game, after dropping the opener, 8-5. Marian is 9-5, 5-1 in the league.

Lakeland put eight Marian errors to good use in the second game, and got a complete-game victory from senior pitcher Kris Saiberlich. He allowed four runs, two earned, on just four hits over nine innings, walking four and striking out five.

Junior Adam Brown had a pair of hits for Lakeland and scored two runs. After Marian tied the game at two in the bottom of the first, the Muskies scored a pair of runs in the second and two more in the sixth.

In the first game, Lakeland led 3-1 thanks to a three-run fourth, but Marian tied the game at three in the bottom of the fifth, and broke it open with three more in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Brown and sophomore Jacob Heinemeyer had two hits each for Lakeland, while freshman Andrew Schartner had a two-run single as part of the fourth inning. Each team committed four errors.

Junior Jake Van Camp suffered the pitching loss, allowing eight runs, four earned, on nine hits in 6.1 innings. He walked one and fanned one. Freshman Bill Miller threw the last 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit and walking three.

Lakeland is scheduled to return to action Tuesday at Lawrence beginning at 1 p.m.
