Softball Struggles vs. Inferno, Splits Doubleheader

Athletics - posted on 4/15/2008

The Lakeland College softball team struggled on offense in its Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader with Alverno College, splitting the pair with a 1-0 win in the first game followed by a 9-2 loss in game two.

The Muskies (8-10, 7-3 NAC) struggled to get on base against the Inferno's tough pitcher, Jessica Goetz, who held her ground within the circle for the duration of both games with a total of 21 strikeouts. Lakeland also left 10 stranded on base for both games, further compounding their offensive troubles.

Sophomore Sara Roberts picked up the win on the mound in game one, giving up just three hits and fanning nine. She was also tagged with the loss in game two, pitching just over three innings before sophomore reliever Cassie Felton entered the game. Felton would forfeit seven runs on six hits after Alverno broke open the game in the sixth inning with five runs scored.

Despite the Muskies' troubles at bat, freshman catcher Kristine Raeder found success at the plate with a 2-2 effort in game one with a pair of doubles on the day. Seniors Elisa Waltz and Kourtney Peters also contributed, as Waltz went 2-3 in game one while Peters registered a double in the same game.

Lakeland will look to turn things around with another NAC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 16, at Concordia University, Wis. Game start time is set for 3 p.m. in Mequon, Wis.
