The Lakeland College baseball team fell to 5-13 in the Northern Athletics Conference after falling to Benedictine, 10-4 and 8-6, on Saturday, April 26, in Lisle, Ill.
The Muskies (8-24) pounded out 12 hits in both games, but it was still not enough. In game one, freshmen Ed Kozlowdski and Dave Novak, sophomore Jacob Heinemeyer and junior Alex Grant led the way with two hits each. In game two, the Muskies were led by senior Adam Hablewitz and freshman Brad Young who had three hits a piece, followed by freshman Ryan Polizzi and Heinemeyer with two hits each.
Freshman Alex Ackerman started game one and took the loss in six innings, giving up seven runs (six earned), on eight hits, walking five and striking out four before freshman Bill Miller and Junior Mike Phillips relieved him. Mike Ruzek took the loss in the second half of the doubleheader, throwing all eight innings for the Muskies. He gave up eight runs (seven earned) on eleven hits, walking four and striking out four.
In game two the Muskies started the scoring in the top of the first inning with two runs with two outs. They held the lead until the fourth when the Eagles scored two. The Eagles tacked on one run in the fifth before the Muskies took the lead back in the fifth when they score three runs, highlighted by back to back singles by Polizzi and Senior Chris Daun to start the inning and an RBI single by Young.
The lead was short-lived though, as the Eagles answered by scoring four in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead. The Muskies got the lead back to one in the eighth when Young led off the inning with a triple followed by a Heinemeyer sacrifice fly to center, but the Eagles answered once again with a run in the bottom half of the inning to close out the game.
The Muskies return home on Sunday, April 27, to face Milwaukee School of Engineering in another NAC doubleheader. Game start time is set for 12 p.m.
