Softball's Offense Fizzles vs. Ripon

Athletics - posted on 4/27/2008

The Lakeland College softball team closed out its regular-season schedule with a pair of losses in its non-conference doubleheader with Ripon College, 3-2 and 3-1, on Sunday, April 27, in Ripon, Wis.

Despite the losses, sophomore pitchers Sara Roberts and Cassie Felton both had solid days in the circle. Roberts took the loss in game one, giving up just five hits and fanning eight, while Felton suffered the loss in the second game on seven hits and seven strikeouts.

However, the Muskies (16-18 overall) had some difficulty getting their offense going to back up their pitchers, as they recorded just three hits in the second game for a total of 10 on the day.

Sophomore second baseman KC Blahnik and freshman left fielder Sam Shepeck led the team at the plate in the first game, going 2-3, while sophomore center fielder Chelsea Coenen ripped an RBI triple in the sixth inning to finally get the Muskies on the board after they were down, 3-0. Coenen would later cross the plate on a sacrifice bunt by senior third baseman Kourtney Peters to give the squad two runs, but that run would be the last in the game.

In part two of the doubleheader, the Muskies held a 1-0 until the fifth inning when the Redhawks scored two and tied on another in the sixth to take the game. Lakeland's single run was off a solo bomb by Coenen in the third inning.

The Muskies will now await the completion of a few other Northern Athletics Conference teams' schedules to determine their seeding in the upcoming NAC Tournament. The tournament is slated to begin on Thursday, May 1, at Jericho Park in Aurora, Ill.
