Cormier nets three as Muskies blank Cougars 5-0

A hat trick by junior forward Ted Cormier (Green Bay) helped the Lakeland men's soccer team to its first victory of the 2008 season, a 5-0 conference win over Concordia Chicago on Saturday afternoon in River Forest, Ill.

Cormier notched three goals for the Muskies (1-0 Northern Athletics Conference, 1-2 overall), who took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

"Ted took a physical beating for the team," Lakeland head coach David Madsen said. "He did a lot of the dirty work to keep possession and really pressured the ball well. He worked his butt off to create chances for us."

Junior midfielder Ryan Malo (Beach Park, Ill.) and senior midfielder Kevin Fitchett (Green Bay) also notched a goal apiece for the Muskies.

"It was a little tough with some early rain delays and it really took us a while to settle in," Madsen said. "After we took the lead into the half, we really stayed focused in the second half and finished. It was a good performance overall."

Freshman goalkeeper Ross Soukup (Plymouth) earned his first collegiate shutout, posting three saves for the Muskies.

With the loss, Concordia Chicago moves to 0-1 in the NAC and 0-6 overall.

The Muskies will travel to Beloit College this Wednesday for a non-conference match-up. Opening kick is set for 4:30 p.m.
