Penalty kicks help Lakeland defeat Rockford 5-1
Athletics - posted on 9/27/2008
Three converted penalty kicks aided the Lakeland men's soccer team in defeating Rockford College 5-1 in Saturday's Northern Athletics Conference match-up at Lakeland.
Junior forward Ted Cormier (Green Bay), senior midfielder Kevin Fitchett (Green Bay) and freshman defenseman Derek Rasmussen (Neenah) tallied a goal apiece on penalty kicks for the Muskies (2-1 NAC, 3-4 overall).
"The penalties that we got were all deserved, so I didn't really have a problem with it," Lakeland head coach David Madsen said. "Sometimes you have games like that where in the run of play it's tough to find goals. I was just glad we got out with the result that we should, which was three points towards conference tournament play
Lakeland was led by junior midfielder Ryan Malo (Beach Park, Ill.), who posted two goals, one in the 26th minute and one in the 54th, which came moments after the Regents (1-3, 1-5) halved the Muskie lead to 2-1.
"We came into the half at 2-0, so I was a little concerned just because it's always kind of a dangerous lead to have where one goal for the opponent gets them back in the game," Madsen said. "Sure enough, they did score, but we came back and Ryan Malo had a nice goal early after, we came right down the field and scored."
Freshman midfielders Adam Benson (Anoka, Minn.) and Alex Finke (Beaver Dam) each had an assist in the game.
The Muskies return to action this Tuesday to take on NAC opponent Maranatha Baptist Bible College. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Lakeland.
