SHEBOYGAN - Five different players scored for the Lakeland men's soccer team as the team defeated Maranatha Baptist Bible College 6-1 in a Northern Athletics Conference contest at Lakeland.
"We played OK today," Lakeland head coach David Madsen said. "We created enough chances and got the finishes we should have. I think we were a little bit lacking today, too, in some areas
we could have been sharper, but we got what we needed out of today, we got the win."
Senior midfielder Kevin Fitchett (Green Bay) led the way with two goals, pushing his season total to seven. Fitchett scored in the 31st minute after weaving his way through the defense and nailing a shot that went off the goalkeeper's hands and through his legs into the back of the net. He also scored in the 63rd minute after rebounding a shot off the keeper's hands by freshman forward Jeremy Hardy (Cooks, Mich.).
Junior midfielder Ted Cormier (Green Bay), freshman midfielder Adam Benson (Anoka, Minn.), Hardy and junior midfielder Ryan Malo (Beach Park, Ill.) also tallied a goal for the Muskies (3-1 NAC, 4-4 overall).
"In training, a lot of the guys are starting to climatize to each other, and raise the level of play, and now things are starting to kind of fall into place," Madsen said.
The only goal surrendered by the Muskie defense came in the 44th minute off of a penalty kick following a hand ball in the box.
"In the first half, giving up that penalty kick was a little frustrating," Madsen said. "We were handling things pretty well, and it was kind of that we gave it away more than they earned it."
The Muskies were able to keep the Crusaders (0-5, 5-6) from possessing the ball for long stretches, keeping the ball on Maranatha's end of the field for much of the contest.
Lakeland returns to action on Saturday to take on Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
