Muskies unbeaten streak continues, winning streak ends with 1-1 tie vs. Marian

SHEBOYGAN - The Lakeland men's soccer team's six-match winning streak came to a halt on Tuesday afternoon as the Muskies tied Marian University 1-1 in a Northern Athletics Conference showdown at Lakeland.
The Muskies remain unbeaten in their last seven contests.
After a goal by senior midfielder Kevin Fitchett (Green Bay) gave the Muskies the lead just under 30 seconds into the game, the team was held scoreless in the last 89 minutes of regulation and for all 20 minutes of overtime by the Sabres (4-9-1 overall, 2-4-1 NAC).
"We came out strong scoring a goal in the first minute, but in many ways, that may have been the peak of the game for us," Lakeland head coach David Madsen said. "We really took our foot off the pedal and let them back in the game, which was very disappointing."
The Muskies (7-4-1, 5-1-1) appeared to take a 2-1 lead in the 78th minute on a breakaway goal by junior midfielder Ryan Malo (Beach Park, Ill.). However, after minutes of discussion, the referee ruled that there was accidentally a second ball in play near the sideline behind Malo's goal, which confused Sabre players and led to the score.
The referees appeared to change the call several times before a consensus was reached to disallow the goal.
"It's understandable, the referee has the final say," Madsen said. "I saw what he was saying, and to be honest, I didn't have any objections to it. He was paying attention to the other ball on the field, and all of a sudden, he looks down the field and the other one's on.
"We were relying a little too much on things that were out of our control anyways," he added. "If we would have stuck home a few of our other chances, which we had ones good enough, it's not an issue."
The Sabres knotted the game at 1-1 with a goal in the 19th minute by midfielder Jose Hernandez.
Freshman goalkeeper Ross Soukup (Plymouth) posted four saves for the Muskies.
Lakeland looks to continue its unbeaten streak at Aurora University on Sunday at 3 p.m. in Aurora, Ill.
