Muskies clinch NAC Tournament bid

Athletics - posted on 10/28/2008

The Lakeland men's soccer team wrapped up a Northern Athletics Conference Tournament bid, playing to a 0-0 tie against second-place Concordia Wisconsin on Tuesday afternoon at Lakeland.

The Muskies will be the No. 6 seed in the six-team tournament and will play this Saturday at third-seeded Aurora.

The Muskies (8-6-2, 6-3-2 NAC) also secured the program's first winning season since 1994, and finished the regular season undefeated at home with a 4-0-2 mark.

"The guys should be proud of all the things we've accomplished so far this season," Lakeland head coach David Madsen said. "We are playing with a lot of confidence right now and playing that well against a team like Concordia is a huge boost for the team."

The Falcons (11-6-1, 8-2-1) outshot the Muskies 16-3, but Madsen said he wasn't troubled by the opportunities allowed by the Lakeland defense.

Lakeland goalkeeper Ross Soukup (Plymouth) posted nine saves for his second shutout of the season.

"Ross made some big saves and broke up a few of Concordia's late attacks," Madsen said. "We just couldn't find opportunities to score, but I'm happy with the way our guys closed the game, which is something we've talked a lot about."

Game time of this Saturday's first round conference tournament match at Aurora is set for 10:30 a.m.
