Muskies' season ends with 3-1 tournament loss at Aurora

The Lakeland men's soccer team saw its season come to a close on Saturday in a 3-1 loss to No. 3 seed Aurora (13-7-1) at the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament quarterfinals in Aurora, Ill.
The sixth-seeded Muskies surrendered two first-first half goals to fall behind 2-0 midway through the half. The goals came within in a four-minute span.
"We let Aurora dictate the game in the first half," Lakeland head coach David Madsen said. "We played not to lose, like we were the higher seed and they were the lower seed."
Freshman forward Jeremy Hardy (Cooks, Mich.) scored the Lakeland's lone goal in the 60th minute to close the Spartan lead to 2-1.
"Jeremy was very opportunistic on the play," Lakeland head coach David Madsen said. "He found some space in the middle and one of their defenders misplayed a ball and Jeremy put it past the goalkeeper."
However, Aurora's Walden Sterrett found the back of the net in the 88th minute to put the game out of reach.
"I was happy that we came back in the second half," Madsen said. "It was a good experience for our younger guys, but we have to learn to challenge no matter what the rankings tell us."
Aurora outshot the Muskies 20-8 for the contest.
The 2008 Muskies (8-7-2) notched the program's first winning season since 1994 and posted an undefeated home record (4-0-2) on the season.
"We did accomplish a lot of things this season," Madsen said, "but I told the returning guys not to make this the high point of their careers. We won't have the element of surprise next year. I think the table is set well for us in the future."
