Muskies earn third at Ripon

Athletics - posted on 4/23/2005

The Lakeland College track team participated in its fourth meet Saturday at Ripon. After last week's 10th place finish, optimism was high for continued success.

Lakeland took third place overall despite not having any throwing events or distance runners. Coach Rich Worsell said "A great step forward for the school and our track program was made today. I was a little disappointed we ran our slowest 4 X 100 relay time of the year, but consistency will come. I am excited about this week with the Private School State Championship as I know we can compete with any school in the state."

The day started well with Lakeland taking second place in the 4 X 100 meter relay. Sam Scharinger then took second place in the long jump with a jump of 5.4 meters.

The day continued well as Rodney Ellison took first place in the high jump clearing 6-foot-4. Ellison failed at 6-8 in his attempt to qualify for the nationals. "I believe we will see Rodney clear 6-10 before this season is over," said coach Rich Worsell.

Richard Bowerman took second place in the 110 meter hurdles despite a strained hamstring. He also took third place in the 400 meter hurdles.

Scharinger ran his best time of the year in the 200 meter dash (22.91 second) to earn first place. Kempton Freeman and Ryan Maiuri also brought points home.

The 100 meter dash saw three different Muskies score points, as Lakeland took second, third and fifth. Courtney Gatlin ran 11.17 for his fastest time of the season.

To end the day, Lakeland competed in the 4 X 400 relay, as the team of Ricardo Brown, Ahkeim McKnight, Maiuri and Scharinger finished the day on a high note by earning first with a time of 3 minutes, 40.22 seconds.
