Athletics - posted on 4/13/2005

The Lakeland softball team split a doubleheader with St. Norbert College Wednesday afternoon, coming from behind to take a 6-5 extra inning decision in the first game and losing the nightcap, 13-2.

In the first game, Pam Valukas walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th to bring home the game's winning run.

The Muskies scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at five and send it into extra frames.

Rachel Griesbach (7-6) pitched the entire game for Lakeland, giving up only one earned run on seven hits while striking out eight Knight batters.

Jenny Zimmerman, batting in the nine hole, batted 4-4 with two doubles and three RBI.

Zimmerman, however, couldn't keep the magic going in the second game, where she took over at the mound. She gave up 10 earned runs on 18 hits in the five inning loss.

Zimmerman's counterpart, Athena Schaefer, gave up only four hits in the game, three of them coming in the Muskies' two run third.

The split moved the Muskies to 9-13 on the season.
