SHEBOYGAN - The Lakeland women's volleyball team survived an unsteady second set to defeat Dominican University 3-0 in a Northern Athletics Conference match-up on Homecoming Friday night at Lakeland.
After quickly taking the first set 25-16, the Muskies (12-5 overall, 5-0 NAC) struggled in the second, falling behind quickly to the Stars 8-3. However, Lakeland fought back to knot the score at 13, then cruised the rest of the way to a 25-21 win.
"I liked that we pushed back in the second set after they pushed for a lead," Lakeland head coach Chad Schreiber said. "I'm glad we pushed back and won that second set."
After jumping out to an 11-5 lead in the third set, the Muskies and Stars (5-12, 0-3) traded points before Lakeland took the set
25-20.
With the absence of starting middle hitter Kim Linger (Eldorado), freshman Allison Davis, a Sheboygan South graduate, stepped in nicely for the Muskies up front, making her first career match start. Schreiber was pleased with her performance.
"We've got a lot of confidence in Allison Davis," Schreiber said. "She's played significant minutes all year so it's not like she was just thrown in. If anything, she has a different rhythm to her approach, so it's a little bit of an adjustment for our setters. From a confidence standpoint, we have as much confidence in Allison as we do anybody else we put in there."
Davis had five kills to help pace the Muskie offense, which had a handful players with five kills or more. Defensively, junior libero Tonia Strebelinski (Berlin) had 13 digs to lead Lakeland.
The Muskies have a quick turnaround, as they will host Concordia Chicago on Saturday at 2 p.m. for their third consecutive home match. The Cougars (10-8, 2-1), who were picked to finish fourth in the NAC coaches' preseason poll, will threaten for the league title and pose a strong challenge to Lakeland.
"Tomorrow is a match that will matter a lot to both teams," Schreiber said. "If we win tomorrow, we give ourselves a two-match cushion. If they win, we're even with them holding the head-to-head tiebreaker. It's a big match for both of us."
