SHEBOYGAN - The Lakeland women's volleyball team clinched its second straight Northern Athletics Conference regular season title with a 3-1 home victory over Wisconsin Lutheran College (19-11, 5-6 NAC) on Tuesday night.
"We don't really want to think or talk about it until we make the NCAA Tournament," Lakeland head coach Chad Schreiber said. "While it feels good to win the conference, this is a step, not our lone goal."
With the conference championship in hand, the Muskies also clinch home court throughout the NAC Tournament.
"My first emotion is that I'm really glad to know we clinched home-court advantage throughout the conference tournament, that's a big deal to us," Schreiber said.
The Muskies (18-8, 10-0) ran into trouble in the second set. After easily taking the first set 25-7, the Warriors stormed back in the second, running off the last three points of the set to take a 25-20 decision.
"I'm concerned we didn't have a second gear in that second set like we've had recently," Schreiber said. "Wisconsin Lutheran really stepped up their blocking and defense, and because we had such an easy win in the first game, our girls stopped making good shot selections."
Lakeland recovered in the final two sets, defeating the Warriors 23-11 in the third and 25-13 in the fourth.
Five players had eight or more kills for the Muskies, including junior outside hitter Brittanie Paulus (15) and sophomore outside hitter Andrea Mueller (14). Senior setter Jessica Sparling added 43 assists and eight kills for Lakeland.
Defensively, junior libero Tonia Strebelinski registered 14 digs, while Paulus added 13 digs.
The Muskies will return to the court this Friday to take on MSOE in their final regular season home match of the year. Seniors Yarixa Cruz, Amanda Ditter, Heidi Kramer and Sparling will be honored for Senior Day at Lakeland.
