SHEBOYGAN - The Lakeland wrestling team came up just short in its bid to upset UW-Stevens Point for a second straight year, falling to the ninth-ranked Pointers 18-21 in a non-conference dual on Tuesday night at Lakeland's Wehr Center.
The Muskies (1-4), who upset then-No. 12 UWSP back on Nov. 13, 2007, were unable to hold off the Pointers after taking a 12-9 lead early in the match. UW-Stevens Point (1-0) posted a run of 12 points off a forfeit and a pair of decisions to take an insurmountable 21-12 lead with one match to play.
"I am very happy with the team," Lakeland head coach Pete Rogers said. "Our team is pretty injury-riddled and we had some other guys that couldn't wrestle for various reasons, so to go out there and wear down the No. 9 team in the nation really showed the character of the guys on this team."
Senior Jonas Flok (Egg Harbor) scored the Muskies' lone pin of the match at 157 pounds, pinning UWSP's Dan Wierzba at 5:15. Flok is now 4-1 on the season.
Junior 285-pounder Adam Sutter (Gladstone, Mich.) moved to 5-0 on the year with a 5-2 decision over Chad Gregory of the Pointers. Three other Muskies, including two who were bumped up from their normal weight classes, registered victories by decision in the dual.
"We had a lot of questions about where we were at after going 1-3 in the Lakeland Duals on Saturday," Rogers said, "but our guys came out ready to wrestle tonight. It was a moral victory for the team."
The Muskies have two weeks off before returning to action on Dec. 3 at Concordia Wisconsin. That dual will be the Northern Wrestling Association opener for Lakeland.
