The Lakeland College wrestling team split its four matches Sunday at the Desert Duals in Las Vegas, Nev.
The Muskies were successful in their first two matches of the day, defeating Pacific (Ore.) 48-6 and Ohio Northern 23-16. Lakeland closed out the day dropping its final two matches, first losing to Cortland State 26-13 and 26-16 in the last match of the day to Great Falls (Mt.).
"We beat the teams we needed to beat and lost to a couple that we wanted to beat," Lakeland head coach Pete Rogers said. "Individually this meet was a little disappointing, but we had some kids step up and wrestle really well.
"Josh DeLuca finished 2-0 on the day and had some big wins as a freshman," said Rogers. "David Copp came back and wrestled hard in his match against Cortland. Kory Theil had one mistake at the beginning of the match he lost that was impossible for him to overcome, but he wrestled awesome and finished 3-1 on the day."
Jonas Flok defeated Kevin Sackett (Cortland) in the Muskies' biggest match of the day. Sackett, the #3 wrestler in the country at 149, moved up to 157 for the match against Flok, who is ranked 8th at 157. Flok knocked off Sackett, recording a major decision with a score of 15-7.
"We've got enough time to correct our mistakes," Rogers said. " At the end of the season we feel we're going to be right where we need to be."
