The Lakeland College wrestling team, ranked 28th in the latest Brute-Adidas NCWA poll, split a pair of dual matches tonight at a triangular hosted by Elmhurst College.
Lakeland fell to 13th-ranked Elmhurst 26-7, but rebounded to defeat 23rd-ranked Trine University 29-11.
The Muskies struggled against the hometown Bluejays, only picking up a pair of victories. Rob Frias (133) collected a major victory and Adam Sutter (285) squeaked past 10th-ranked Mark Costello 3-2.
Lakeland fared better against Trine, receiving points in seven of 10 matches. David Copp (125), Ben Chapman (157), and Jake Frias (165) recorded victories, J.D. Sylvanus (184) was awarded a major decision, Jake Montie (141) and Isaac Roberson (149) collected technical falls, and Adam Sutter (285), the only Muskie wrestler to win both matches on the night, scored the lone pin for Lakeland, winning in 37 seconds.
"We wrestled well against a very good Trine team and struggled against Elmhurst," Lakeland head coach Pete Rogers said. "While there was a big point gap in our Elmhurst match, I think we wrestled much better than the score indicates.
"Adam Sutter picked up a big win against the 7th-ranked wrestler in the nation," said Rogers. "He competed very well in getting a win that he needed."
"David Copp gave the number two (Jake Oster) wrestler all he could handle in his match and picked up a great win against Trine, said Rogers. "Rob Frias came in at semester for us and picked up a win in his first collegiate match."
Lakeland returns to action January 13th at home in a match against MSOE. Opening match is slated for 7 p.m.
