Muskies fall in season ending dual
The No. 30 Lakeland College wrestling team closed out the 2008-09 dual season with a 32-3 loss to No. 9 UW-La Crosse Friday night at the Wehr Center.
Senior Jonas Flok (157) picked up the only victory for the Muskies, recording a 10-4 decision over Ryan Farwell. Flok (Egg Harbor) scored nine straight points after falling behind 2-0 early in the match.
Lakeland struggled to hold on to late leads in the first three matches. Senior David Copp (125) and freshman Rob Frias (133) entered the third period ahead and failed to hold on, while senior Kory Theil (141) scored the first points of his match on an early escape in the third period, but was taken down twice in a 4-3 defeat.
"These guys are hard workers, and I know they didn't quit tonight," Lakeland head coach Pete Rogers said. "I think the pressure got to some of them early and by the end of the first period they were gassed."
Isaac Roberson (149) lost by tech. fall to 6th-ranked Matt Mauseth 18-3 and Josh Zabel, 5th in the latest d3wrestle.com poll, picked up the only pin of the night in 1:33 over AJ Aronstam.
In a rematch of last Saturday's championship match at the Wheaton College-Pete Willson Invite, 7th-ranked Adam Sutter dropped a 7-1 decision against Dan Laurent, the nation's No. 2 heavyweight and defending national champion.
"We need to work our tails off this next week," said Rogers. "We have some talented guys that still have a chance at having a great end to their season."
The Muskies return to the mat next Saturday, to host the Northern Wrestling Association Tournament. Opening matches in the Wehr Center start at 10 a.m.
