Lakeland places fifth at Matman Invitational

Athletics - posted on 1/3/2009

The No. 27 Lakeland College wrestling team finished in fifth place at the two-day, 10-team Matman Invitational at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, on Saturday and Sunday.

After standing in seventh place at the conclusion of the tournament's first day, the Muskies moved up two spots on Sunday to finish with 69 points, one shy of fourth-place William Penn (Iowa) University.

Wartburg (Iowa) College, the nation's top-ranked team, was the tournament champion with 169 points.

"The tournament really had some great competition featuring some of the top teams in the nation, but I still don't think we wrestled up to our full potential," Lakeland head coach Pete Rogers said.

Four members of the Lakeland squad placed in the top five in their respective weight classes.

Junior Jake Frias was the Muskies' top finisher. The Oak Lawn, Ill., native placed second at 165 pounds, falling short in the championship match in a 12-4 major decision to Wartburg's Justin Hanson, the nation's top-ranked wrestler in the weight class.

"Jake has been at a different level in the last month or so," Rogers said. "He is on the right track to do some big things, and is ready to turn the corner and become a national competitor."

Senior David Copp (Oostburg) finished the weekend at fourth place in the 125-pound division. After falling in the semifinals, Copp knocked off Travis Taylor of Morningside, the bracket's No. 1 seed, by pin at 6:10, to play in the third-place match.

"David had a phenomenal first day, but struggled a little bit today," Rogers said, "I'm excited, though, because he showed he can get to the next level even when he does struggle."

Lakeland also had a pair of fifth-place finishers in senior Kory Thiel (141 pounds) and sophomore Bill Wood (285).

Thiel, a Crystal Lake, Ill., native, registered a pin in just over four minutes over Christopher Tims of Wartburg in his final match.

Wood (Manistique, Mich.) stepped in nicely at the heavyweight position for junior Adam Sutter, who was unable to compete due to illness. Sutter is ranked among the nation's top 10 in the d3wrestle.com rankings and the coaches' poll.

The Muskies return to dual action this Thursday at No. 16 Elmhurst (Ill.) College. Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
