Muskies split pair in Tucson

The Lakeland College softball team had mixed results in its play Wednesday afternoon, losing first to Wesleyan 9-3 before holding off Schreiner 5-3 in the Muskies' fourth day at the Tucson Invitational Games.
Lakeland (3-5) put the first runs on the board against Wesleyan, scoring three in the third inning. KC Blahink (Gladstone, Mich.) reached on a walk, and a Leah Sheahan (Salem) single put runners on first and second. A double-steal placed both runners in scoring position. After a fielder's choice, Sara Roberts (Escanaba, Mich.) drove in one run and Sam Shepeck (Gladstone, Mich.) followed with a two run hit.
The Cardinals responded in the bottom half of the inning with six runs of their own as the Muskies gave up two errors and a passed ball as Wesleyan took a 6-3 lead after three and scored three more to down Lakeland 9-3.
"We felt like we were in control against Wesleyan, but we gave them too many chances," Lakeland head coach Chad Buchmann said. "We gave up two errors and a passed ball and extended the inning for them."
Roberts led the Muskie offensive effort with two hits, and Chelsea Coenen (Wrightstown), Blahnik, Sheahan and Shepek all had one hit each.
The Muskies fared much better in game two of the afternoon in knocking off Schreiner 5-3.
Trailing 1-0 after the first inning, Corine Demske (Wrightstown) drove in Cori Zornacki (Colorado Springs, Colo.) to tie the contest at 1-1.
Lakeland took its first lead of the game as Coenen manufactured a run by reaching on a double, stealing third base and scoring on a passed ball.
Schriener took back the lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning.
Trailing 3-2 in the sixth, Kayla VandeWettering (Appleton) drove in two Muskies as Lakeland scored three in the inning to lead 5-3.
Roberts, who entered in relief in the fifth, got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh with a one out strike out and a game-ending ground out to first.
Lakeland closes out its stay in Tucson tomorrow with games against Ponoma-Pitzer and St. Mary.
