Muskies pound Rockford 40-0 for first NAC win

Athletics - posted on 10/3/2009

The Lakeland College football team used great field position and a strong defensive effort to shut out Rockford 40-0 Saturday afternoon at Sam Greeley Field in Rockford, Ill., in the Northern Athletics Conference opener for both schools.

The Muskies (1-3, 1-0 NAC) scored their first touchdown of the day on a 12 yard reception by Roberto Flores (Milwaukee) from quarterback Jake Dworak (DePere). The 14 yard drive was set up when Josh Gordon (Pontiac, Mich.) forced a fumble that was recovered by linebacker Will Baldwin deep in Rockford (0-4, 0-1 NAC) territory.

"We did a great job of converting turnovers for points today," Lakeland head coach Kevin Doherty said.

Sophomore Jeremy Williams (Zion, Ill.) capitalized on another Rockford fumble in the first quarter, running 30 yards to the end zone on the first play of the possession for the second Muskie touchdown of the game. Williams ended with 25 carries for 123 yards, his second straight week of 100-plus yards rushing.

Freshman Adam Miller (Marion) caught a 17 yard pass for his first touchdown of the year to cap a 16 play, 80 yard drive in the second quarter. The fullback has 15 receptions after four weeks for 79 yards.

Freshman Justin Laack (Sheboygan Falls) scored the final Lakeland touchdown of the first half, a 10 yard run with just under two minutes remaining in the second quarter as the Muskies took a 27-0 halftime lead. The score was Laack's second touchdown of the season and his first on offense.

Lakeland struck quickly after halftime as Dworak found Flores again on a 25 yard pass after a Regents fumble for a 33-0 advantage. Flores leads all Lakeland receivers this season with 22 receptions and 379 yards receiving.

Dworak threw his fourth and final touchdown later in the third to leading Muskie scorer Jacob Heinemeyer (Shiocton) on a 30 yard play with 5:37 remaining in the quarter.

Lakeland scored four of six touchdowns on the day on drives that started inside the Rockford 37 yard line.

Despite throwing only nine completions, Dworak threw for 154 yards and four touchdowns in the victory.

The Muskies rushed for a season-high 171 yards on 41 carries this afternoon as they picked up 325 total yards of offense.

Lakeland held Rockford to just 70 total yards on 54 plays. The Muskies forced six fumbles and recovered three as the Regents gained the fewest number of yards on offense so far this season.

"The defense did a great job of playing assignment football," Doherty said. "They played disciplined and completed their tackles."

Blaine Hornes (Neenah) and Baldwin each had five total tackles to lead the Lakeland defense. Hornes recorded two tackles for a loss of six yards while Baldwin recovered two fumbles.

Brandon Wolff (Shawano) had the third Muskie fumble recovery and David Ketchum (Wisconsin Rapids) nabbed the lone Lakeland interception.

Jarred Querrio (Norway, Mich.) and Gordon each recorded a sack as the front seven held strong, allowing Rockford .76 yards per attempt on 39 rushes .

"We still have to stop making mental penalties," Doherty said. "We gave up too many penalties that gave Rockford a first down and if we keep giving up yards it's going to end up proving costly down the road."

Lakeland returns to action next Saturday, October 10, for a homecoming showdown against Wisconsin Lutheran. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
