Offensive struggles, defensive woes cost Muskies in second half

Athletics - posted on 10/17/2009

Concordia Chicago responded to an 11-point halftime deficit with 20 unanswered points, holding the Lakeland offense scoreless in the third and fourth quarters as the Muskies lost their first Northern Athletics Conference game of the season 41-32 Saturday afternoon.

The Lakeland (2-4, 2-1 NAC) defense gave up 411 yards and five touchdowns to CUC quarterback Mike Marotta as four of Concordia Chicago's five passing TD's were at least 20 yards or longer.

Miscues by the Concordia (5-1, 2-1) offense and steady yardage from the Lakeland led to a  32-21 advantage  at halftime. Jeremy Williams (Zion, Ill.) and Roberto Flores (Milwaukee) each capped drives in the first quarter with short-yardage touchdowns.

Brandon Wolff (Shawano) intercepted his first pass of the season in the second quarter and returned it 41 yards before fumbling at the goal line where it was recovered by linebacker Jamie Schramm (Cuba City) in the end zone to give Lakeland a 25-14 lead.

After Concordia responded with a touchdown of their own, tight end Eric Zuelsdorf (Cedar Grove) took an 18 yard pass down the middle of the field for a score for the second consecutive week.

Concordia struggled with long snaps in the first half, committing five fumbles and losing two while a third was kicked out of the end zone for a safety.

The Muskies had turnover problems of their own, losing two fumbles and three interceptions.

"Bottom line we didn't score in the second half," Lakeland head coach Kevin Doherty said. "That first drive after halftime was looking great before we had a breakdown in communication in the quarterback-center exchange, and after the turnover it all just seemed to snowball from there."

Each team was penalized for over 90 yards as there were a combined 23 penalties in the game.

Lakeland travels next week to Lisle, Ill. for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff against Benedictine.
