Lakeland clinches NAC Tournament berth in road win

Athletics - posted on 10/20/2009

The Lakeland women's volleyball team clinched a spot in the eight-team Northern Athletics Conference Tournament with a 25-16, 25-20, 25-19 victory at Marian on Tuesday night.

The Muskies (16-10 overall, 8-2 NAC), who have been the tournament's No. 1 seed in each of the last two seasons, currently stand in second place in the league and could still be as high as the top seed or as low as the seventh seed.

In the match, Lakeland posted an impressive .326 hitting percentage as a team, compared to just .090 for the Sabres (5-19, 3-6).

The Muskies received stellar offensive performances from seniors Brittanie Paulus (Belgium, Wis.) and Kim Linger (Eldorado, Wis.). Paulus tallied nine kills, while Linger posted a team-high 11 kills with a .500 hitting percentage in 20 attacks.

"It was refreshing to see Brittanie play well again, because she's been in a bit of a slump recently," Lakeland coach Chad Schreiber said. "Kim continues to be on a roll, and (senior) Tonia (Strebelinski) played good defense in the back row."

Strebelinski, a Berlin, Wis., native registered six digs in the match. Paulus, the school's all-time digs leader, led the team with 12.

Lakeland hosts Aurora, which is a half-game behind the Muskies at 7-2 in the league, on Friday at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, the Muskies welcome first-place Benedictine to the Woltzen Gymnasium for a 12 p.m. match. Prior to the match, Lakeland's six seniors will be recognized in their last home contest.
