Stephanie Chatfield scored her third goal of the day and the eventual game winning goal in the 87th minute as the Lakeland College women's soccer team fell in it's 2009 opener to Northland International 3-2 Tuesday afternoon.
Trailing 3-1 late in the contest, Dana Schmidt recorded her first goal of the year in the 88th minute to cap off a furious 15 minute rally in which the Muskies recorded a majority of their 10 second half shots. Sophomore Lindsay Rogers nearly tied the match at two apiece in the 84th minute on a one-on-one with Northland keeper but her shot from the right side of the box caught a piece of Northland keeper Damita Rodriguez's hand and sailed wide to the left.
A minute after Chatfield scored the first goal of the game, Jaime Wichman put Lakeland on the scoreboard f 14 minutes into the half with a shot that deflected off a Northland defender and found the inside of the goal to bring the game to a 1-1 tie. Chatfield added her second goal of the afternoon in the 23rd minute to give Northland a 2-1 lead heading into the half.
The Muskies finished the afternoon with 19 total shots and 14 shots on goal.
Goalkeeper Whitney England stopped six shots on the day including a couple of Northland attempts from point-blank range.
The Muskies return to action this weekend, traveling to Decorah, Iowa to take part in the Luther Labor Day Classic with games against Nebraska Wesleyan on Friday and host Luther on Saturday.
