Sosa pushes Lakeland to victory

Athletics - posted on 10/10/2009

Rodolfo "Tito" Sosa picked a great time to score the first goal of his college career for the Lakeland men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon.

The senior fired in a shot to the lower right corner of the goal on a low cross from Ted Cormier to give the Muskies a 1-0 win over Wisconsin Lutheran in a Northern Athletics Conference contest at Lakeland.

"We needed someone to make a difference today, and we got a great effort from Tito today," Lakeland head coach Dave Madsen said. "He won a 50/50 ball and used a great finish to score."

Sosa missed a shot minutes earlier that deflected off of Wisconsin Lutheran goalkeeper Matt Eisold's hands and ricocheted off the crossbar. That was one of a group of close chances for the Muskies (6-5-1 overall, 5-2 NAC), who fired off 15 shots on the match.

Lakeland goalkeeper Alex Piekarski picked up his first shutout of the season with five saves on nine Wisconsin Lutheran (3-8-2, 1-4-1) shots. The freshman has three wins in five games played.

Despite the win, Madsen hopes to see continued improvement as his squad has three matches in the coming week.

"We played well enough to win," Madsen said. "This is just one more step to making the conference tournament."
