SHEBOYGAN - The Lakeland men's soccer team held a one-goal lead with 25 minutes to play, but was unable to hang on in a 3-2 home loss to Edgewood in a Northern Athletics Conference contest on Tuesday afternoon.

The Muskies (6-6-1 overall, 5-3 NAC) surrendered back-to-back goals in a 10-minute span late in the second half after taking a 2-1 lead on an unassisted goal by freshman Rodolfo Sosa.

Edgewood (9-3-2, 6-1) scored in the 66th and 74th minutes to turn the deficit into an advantage with just over 15 minutes remaining in the game.

"We didn't do the grunt work as far as winning '50-50' balls and keeping possession after we scored our second goal," Lakeland coach David Madsen said. "We just didn't pay attention to the little things, and dropped three points we could have used in the conference standings."

After Edgewood scored just over five minutes into the match, Lakeland's Adam Benson responded with just nine seconds remaining in the first half.

Benson (Anoka, Minn.) hooked a free kick around the Eagle defense just inside the crossbar and left post to tie the match.

In the 53rd minute, Sosa (Kimberly, Wis.) picked up a deflected ball and put it past the keeper to the left post to give Lakeland a temporary lead.

"We started slow, and I was a little disappointed with that first goal we gave up," Madsen said. "But I think our free kick goal really sparked us to life, and our second goal was also a boost."

Lakeland goalkeeper Alex Piekarski (Menasha, Wis.) saved five shots. Lakeland was out-shot 12-5 in the match.
