Lakeland surrenders lead, falls in OT

SHEBOYGAN - The Lakeland men's soccer team suffered a gut-wrenching 2-1 double-overtime loss to MSOE in a Northern Athletics Conference match on a wet, windy Thursday afternoon.

The Muskies (8-9-1 overall, 6-5 NAC) held a 1-0 advantage through much of the second half. However, the Raiders found the back of the net in the 80th minute, finding a crease in the Lakeland defense to even the score.

MSOE (12-5-2, 9-1-1) would continue its offensive attack in the extra time, converting on a rebound in the 108th minute to clinch the sudden-death win.

Lakeland found a goal just under three minutes into the second half, when senior Ted Cormier (Green Bay, Wis.) found freshman Jacob Kleinschmidt (Neenah, Wis.) on a beautiful through ball. Kleinschmidt beat Raiders goalkeeper Alex Mejac to the ball and finished into a wide open net.

Freshman goalkeeper Alex Piekarski (Menasha, Wis.) stopped six shots for the Muskies.

Thursday's contest marked the regular season finale for both teams. The Muskies, who are seeded sixth in the NAC Tournament, will play No. 3 Edgewood on Sunday at 12 p.m. in Madison, Wis.

With a win in the first round, Lakeland would play at top-seeded Dominican on Wednesday.
