The Lakeland baseball team combined a slew of hits with a solid defensive effort to win 17-10 and 18-7 in a pair of seven-inning games at Cardinal Stritch on Tuesday afternoon in Milwaukee.
The Muskies (9-11 overall, 4-2 Northern Athletics Conference) pounded out 38 hits while committing only one error in the two games combined, pushing their road record to 6-0 for the season.
In Game 1, Lakeland received a pair of home runs each from sophomores Cal Post (Appleton) and Andrew Schartner (Sturgeon Bay).
Schartner, the team's leadoff man and right fielder, was one of five Muskie hitters with at least three hits in the game. He also scored three times and knocked in six runs.
"I felt good," Schartner said. "I was seeing the ball like it was in high-definition, and made solid contact. Everyone was hitting, though; it was a team effort."
Of the Muskies' 20 hits in the game, nine were for extra bases. Schartner couldn't find a reason for the success, but hopes the team can duplicate the effort.
"I have no idea why the team hit like it did today, but we have to keep doing it," Schartner said. "We didn't back up our pitching last week against Concordia (Wis.), so we wanted to make sure we did that this time."
Senior captain Mike Phillips (Green Bay) pitched five innings to pick up his first victory of the season. Freshman Matt Buhrow (Edgerton) finished the game for Lakeland.
The second game saw more of the same, as Lakeland scored 11 runs on nine hits in the fifth inning to turn a 6-4 deficit into a nine-run advantage.
Sophomore catcher David Novak (Algoma) and sophomore second baseman Ryan Polizzi (Woodstock, Ill.) led the Muskies with three hits and four RBIs apiece.
Sophomore hurler Matt Katzman (Prairie du Sac) also registered his first win of the year, throwing five innings and striking out six.
Lakeland continues its busy week with a doubleheader against Marian tomorrow at Wildwood Park in Sheboygan. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
"It's more mental; we just have to be focused," Schartner said of the busy week. "You can't let your mind tell you you're tired. It's only nine innings, and that's what you have to tell yourself."
