Muskie offense scores 19 in sweep of Edgewood
Athletics - posted on 4/11/2009
The Lakeland College softball team exploded for 19 runs and 26 hits in 5-0 and 14-9 Northern Athletics Conference victories over Edgewood College Saturday afternoon in Madison.
The Muskies (15-5, 8-0) jumped on the board early as KC Blahnik (Gladstone, Mich.) hit her third lead-off home run of the season and her fifth of the year as Lakeland took a 1-0 lead.
Lakeland put two more runs on the board in the third inning. Chelsea Coenen (Wrightstown) hit a two-run shot down the right field line with Blahnik on first base to stretch the Muskie lead to three.
Sara Roberts (Escanaba, Mich.) hit her first home run of the year in the sixth inning, driving in two runs to cap the five run Muskie victory.
Roberts threw seven innings in the circle, giving up no runs and three hits with no walks and six strikeouts. She faced 22 batters, one more than the minimum.
The Muskies scored half of their runs in the second inning in game two, bringing in seven runs on six hits. After Alyssa Nelson (Germantown) walked with the bases loaded, Blahnik, Coenen and Leah Sheahan (Salem) all recorded hits to drive in runs.
Lakeland added a pair of runs each in the third and fourth innings and tallied one run in the sixth and seventh. Cassie Felton (Green Bay) hit her first home run of the year in the fourth inning as Lakeland set a school record with four home runs in a doubleheader.
Roberts (11-3) picked up the win despite allowing 10 hits and seven runs (five earned) in four innings. Felton threw the final three innings and allowed two unearned runs on three hits and two walks.
"Every ball we hit today was a rocket off the bat," Lakeland coach Chad Buchmann said. "Our hitters made Edgewood do a great job of throwing them balls that they could hit instead of chasing whatever they wanted to give us."
Seven Muskies ended the day with multiple hits. Blahnik was 6-of-8 with five runs and three runs batted in from the lead-off spot. Coenen drove in four runs and scored three times for the Muskies. Christina Moore (New London), Felton, Roberts, Shepeck and Sheahan all had at least two hits to end the day.
The Muskies, winners of their last 13, head to Waukesha for a non-conference doubleheader with Carroll College on Monday, April 13, at 3:15 p.m.
