Muskies fall short at Aurora

AURORA, Ill.----The Lakeland softball team lost for the first time in 24 games Saturday afternoon, dropping a pair of 3-4 and 3-5 Northern Athletics Conference games to Aurora at Stuart Sportsplex.
Trailing 1-0 late in game one, KC Blahnik (Gladstone, Mich.) and Chelsea Coenen (Wrightstown) each reached base to lead off the top of the seventh. reaching third and second on a double steal, Blahnik scored the first Muskie run of the day on a sacrifice bunt by Christina Moore (New London). Coenen put the Muskies ahead by scoring on a wild pitch, and Sara Roberts (Escanaba, Mich.) singled to score Leah Sheahan to give Lakeland a 3-1 lead entering the bottom of the seventh.
Aurora tied the contest in their half of the inning, scoring two runs on four hits and leaving runners on first and third.
The Muskies failed to reach base in both the eighth and ninth innings, and Aurora scored in the bottom of the ninth as Caitlyn Clay reached on an error, stole second, advanced to third on a base hit and scored on a wild pitch as the Spartans took game one.
Blahnik and Roberts combined for five of Lakeland's six hits as the Muskies struck out 16 times in 32 at bats.
Lakeland (25-7, 18-2) never led in game two as Aurora got off to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Roberts led off the Lakeland second with a home run, the only hit of the inning to bring the Muskies within one.
Aurora answered with a run of its own in the second to maintain its two-run lead.
Both teams added a pair of runs in the third. Moore and Coenen each drove in a run for the Muskies tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the third, but fell behind 5-3 at the end of the inning.
Lakeland lost any chance at a potential comeback when the game was called after two rain delays after five innings.
Roberts and Cassie Felton each took a loss for Lakeland as the Muskies lost their first conference games of the season. They fall back to second place in the NAC after a few days of claiming the top spot.
Lakeland returns to action tomorrow with two more games in the Chicagoland area against third-place Benedictine at noon.
