Muskies move on to final day of NAC tournament

Athletics - posted on 5/1/2009

Outfielders Chelsea Coenen and Leah Sheahan each hit their second home run of the day as the Lakeland softball team knocked third seed Benedictine from the 2009 NAC softball tournament Friday afternoon in Milwaukee.

Sheahan hit a deep shot that cleared the fence in left center in the bottom of the third, scoring Alyssa Nelson from third as she gave Lakeland a 2-0 lead.

Benedictine responded in the fifth, scoring a single run and leaving runners on second and third as pitcher Sara Roberts got a ground out to third to end the inning.

Coenen answered with a two out blast to center field in the Lakeland half of the fifth, giving Lakeland a 3-1 advantage entering the sixth.

The Muskies put the game away in the bottom of the sixth, scoring a pair of runs on two hits and a pair of walks to grab a four-run lead.

"We got knocked down in our opener, and it took us a while to respond," Lakeland coach Chad Buchmann said. "Errors in the first two games cost us greatly, and when we shored up our defense against Benedictine everything started to go out way."

Despite giving up 11 hits, Lakeland pitcher Sara Roberts allowed only two runs and walked none, stranding eight Benedictine runners.

The Muskies return to action at the NAC tournament Saturday, May 2, at 11 a.m. against the loser of Dominican-Concordia Wisconsin, with the winner of that game moving to the championship round later in the afternoon.
