KC Blahnik scored 30 points as the Lakeland College women's basketball team edged Carroll University 88-80 in overtime Monday night in Waukesha.
The senior from Gladstone, Mich., shot 12-of-20 from the field as the Muskies dominated the overtime session in the first game of the season for both teams.
"KC was outstanding tonight," Lakeland head coach Teri Johnson said. "This was one of the most complete games she's had in her career. She did everything for us tonight."
Down 11 points with five minutes remaining in the first half, Lakeland chipped away to enter halftime trailing 36-32.
"Coming out of our scrimmages, one thing we talked about was not giving up," Johnson said. "Maintaining focus this season is going to help us tremendously."
The first Muskie lead of the second half came on a Mary Dennewitz (Chicago, Ill.) 3-pointer with 3:22 put Lakeland up 72-69. The Muskies held on to the lead until Leah Lemke sunk a pair of free-throws with one second remaining to force the extra session.
Chelsea Coenen (Wrightstown) scored the first two Lakeland points in overtime as the Muskies quickly ran up an 84-75 lead on nine straight points. A Blahnik 3-pointer with 51 seconds remaining sealed the eventual eight point victory.
Katie Kilton, a Waukesha native, recorded a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds and added an impressive five blocks on the evening.
Dennewitz scored 11 of her 18 points at the free-throw line on 16 attempts. She led Lakeland with six assists and turned the ball over just twice in 32 minutes.
Terra Hiben (Boyceville), one of the Muskies' top defender, collected five steals to go with five points and six rebounds.
Lakeland shot at a 44 percent clip for the game but was above a 50 percent rate in both the second half and overtime periods.
Alyssa Schuttenhelm (Waterford) and Leah Eisner (Stevens Point) scored six and seven points, respectively, with three rebounds apiece off the bench in the first college action for each player.
"It was great to see an outstanding team effort tonight," Johnson said. "We have a deep bench that brings out the best in our starters. They showed us a lot and it's encouraging to go into our tournament with a win to open the season."
Lakeland returns home for the 2009 Lakeland Tip-Off Tournament on Friday, November 20 against Lawrence. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
