The Lakeland College women basketball team handily defeated North Park 70-38 in the championship game of the Lakeland Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon in Wolzen Gymnasium.
Chelsea Coenen, named the tournament MVP, dominated inside for the Muskies, scoring 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds, both team highs, as Lakeland shot 48 percent from the field in the commanding victory.
"Chelsea is more focused and disciplined on offense this season," Lakeland head coach Teri Johnson said. "She's improved her game on both sides of the court compared to last year."
Lakeland eventually pulled out to a 13 point advantage with 6:11 remaining in the first half after both teams traded possession of the lead in the early minutes, and the Muskies entered halftime leading 40-22. Coenen scored 16 of her 18 points in the opening 20 minutes on 6-of-10 shooting and a perfect 3-of-3 from the free throw line.
The Muskies continued to build the lead in the second half, pulling ahead by 33 points late in the half before closing the 32-point victory.
"We knew going in it would be a tough defensive battle," Johnson said. "We didn't get off to the start we wanted but once we got going we didn't look back."
North Park struggled from the field, shooting just 25 percent from the field and failing to convert a three-point shot on seven attempts.
Katie Kilton was the other Muskie to reach double figures, scoring 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting.
Lakeland shot 81 percent from the free throw line, converting 13-of-16 attempts on the day.
The Muskies face Finlandia at home Tuesday, November 24 at 7 p.m. before their first Northern Athletics Conference game of the season on Nov. 28 at Rockford.
"Being able to get our bench ready this early in the season is going to pay off for us down the line," Johnson said. "Having four games to start the season gives us a good chance to clean things up before conference play."
