Muskies drop season opener

The Lakeland men's basketball team suffered a 77-62 non-conference defeat to Lake Forest in the squad's season opener at Lake Forest, Ill.
Down 38-29 at the half, the Muskies (0-1) were unable to score until the 15:28 mark in the second as Lake Forest made a 14-0 run to take a 23-point lead with 16 1/2 minutes to play.
"We came out flat to start the second half," Lakeland coach Aaron Aanonsen said. "We were sloppy on the offensive end and weren't doing the little things on defense. You always need a good start to the second half, especially when you're down nine."
Lakeland was able to force 20 turnovers, but the Foresters (1-0) shot 54.2 percent from the field and outscored the Muskies 30-8 on points in the paint.
"The points in the paint were a result of us not playing good weak side defense," Aanonsen said. "I thought we've been doing a nice job in practice, but we took a few steps back today."
Forward Jake Schwarz (Sheboygan, Wis.) starred for the Muskies in the first half, tallying 16 points. However, the sophomore picked up his third foul early in the second half and was held scoreless in the frame.
Freshman guard Jamie Koebe (Seymour, Wis.) posted 15 points, including 12 in the second half, shooting 5-of-8 from 3-point range in his collegiate debut.
"Jamie came out and was confident," Aanonsen said. "He shot it well, and was known for doing it in high school. He did some very good things offensively."
Lakeland shot 38.2 percent for the game as 10 Muskie players saw at least 11 minutes of action.
The Muskies face Mississippi College at the North Central College/Holiday Inn Select Tip-Off Classic on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
