Senior Adam Sutter of the Lakeland wrestling team clinched his second consecutive bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday at the Great Lakes Regional in Minneapolis, Minn.
Sutter, the No. 3 seed at heavyweight, nearly missed out on the regional championship after dropping a 4-1 decision to Elmhurst's Mark Corsello, the nation's No. 2 wrestler according to d3wrestle.com, in the finals. The Gladstone, Mich., native's runner-up finish was enough to qualify for the national tournament, which takes place March 5-6 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Sutter (25-3) wrapped up his bid by knocking off second seeded Andrew Witzel of Augsburg by a 4-2 overtime decision in the semifinals. His achievement marks the fifth time a wrestler has qualified for nationals in school history.
"Sutter had a great day," Lakeland coach Pete Rogers said. "He beat Witzel, who he had lost to last season twice, including once in the Great Lakes Regional. The final match was definitely one he is capable of winning."
Last season, Sutter qualified as a wild card and claimed All-America status by finishing sixth nationally.
"If he's on and continues to improve over the next couple weeks, the sky's the limit," Rogers said. "I don't think he has peaked yet, so hopefully he does at the national tournament."
The Muskies, who won their third straight Northern Wrestling Association title last week, finished sixth out of 15 teams at the regional tournament and placed five individuals in the top six of their respective weight classes.
"The other guys wrestled their hearts out, but it just wasn't meant to be as far as going to nationals," Rogers said. "It's disappointing, but I can't say they didn't leave it all on the mat."
Freshman Ryan Renon (De Pere, Wis.) was Lakeland's next highest finisher, securing fourth place with a 4-2 record on the day. The 174-pounder knocked off Matthew Pfarr of St. John's, the nation's No. 4 wrestler and top seed, in the consolation semifinals. Renon, who was seeded seventh, concludes his rookie season with a 32-12 mark, setting the school record for wins in one season by a freshman.
"Renon continues to wrestle his tail off," Rogers said. "He wrestled two weight classes up from where he started the season, and is every bit as good as the three guys from his weight class that are going to nationals ... his future is bright."
Senior captain Jacob Frias wrapped up his Lakeland career with a fifth-place showing at 165 pounds. The Oak Lawn, Ill., native was 34-10 on the year and finished with 103 wins in his four-year run, good for second in program history.
Junior Isaac Roberson (13-8) and freshman Chris Weber (20-21) each finished in sixth place at 149 and 184 pounds, respectively. It was the second straight finish in sixth for Roberson at the Great Lakes Regional.
Senior Ben Chapman (Plymouth, Wis.) posted a 1-2 mark in his final day as a Lakeland wrestler.
"Jake and Ben put their heart and soul into the program," Rogers said. "I couldn't ask for two better people to represent the program ... they are both extremely hard workers and will succeed in whatever they do in life."
