Lakeland moves above .500 with win at Silver Lake

Athletics - posted on 1/9/2010

The Lakeland men's basketball team turned a 41-29 halftime advantage into a 28-point lead just under five minutes into the second period on its way to a 95-56 victory over Silver Lake on Saturday afternoon in Manitowoc, Wis.

The Muskies (6-5, 3-1 Northern Athletics Conference) shot 67.9 percent in the second half and just over 57 percent for the game as all 14 of the team's active players saw at least five minutes of action.

Lakeland carried plenty of momentum into the locker room after a buzzer-beating jumper by senior guard Khendal Andrews (Kankakee, Ill.) to end the first half.

The Muskies then jumped Silver Lake for an 18-2 run to start the second, putting the contest well out of reach. The Lakers would get no closer than 19 points for the remainder of the game.

"We emphasized getting out in transition and getting some easy baskets offensively," Lakeland coach Aaron Aanonsen said. "We played with a lot of energy near the end of the first half and stayed with it in the second. I think the tempo kind of wore down Silver Lake."

Thirteen of Lakeland's 14 active players scored at least one point in the game as Aanonsen tried to keep fresh legs on the court with the torrid pace of the game. No player played more than 27 minutes in the first game of a stretch in which the team plays four games in eight days.

The Muskies held Silver Lake (0-14) to 37 percent shooting playing zone for most of the contest.

"Every day we talk about containing penetration and contesting jump shots," Aanonsen said. "We try to keep teams off-balance and not give up any easy looks."

Lakeland made 10-of-19 from beyond the 3-point line and out-rebounded the Lakers 43-26. The team's 95 points are the most it has scored in one game since Feb. 26, 2008, against Wisconsin Lutheran.

Sophomore forward Jake Schwarz (Sheboygan, Wis.) led all scorers with 25 points on 10-for-14 shooting, while junior forward Trevor McKown (Hot Springs, S.D.) chipped in with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Andrews (Kankakee, Ill.) and freshman guard Jamie Koebe (Seymour, Wis.) added 12 and 11 points each, respectively.

Lakeland resumes action Monday at home against Northland International at 6 p.m.
