SHEBOYGAN - After stringing together consecutive victories, the Lakeland men's basketball team was unable to extend the streak Monday, losing 78-76 to Northland International in a non-conference battle at Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies (6-6, 3-1 Northern Athletics Conference) had a chance to tie the game with the ball under their basket with 1.2 seconds remaining. Sophomore forward Jake Schwarz (Sheboygan, Wis.), who led the team with 27 points and 10 rebounds in the contest, had a good look from the corner but missed long as the buzzer sounded.

Lakeland, which trailed for a majority of the second half, took a three-point lead after a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Josh Regal with 2:32 remaining.

After the teams traded baskets, the Pioneers' Joel Widmer made a pair of free throws with 29 seconds left to give Northland (10-3) the lead for good.

The Pioneers knocked down 15-for-34 from beyond the arc to offset a 32-10 Lakeland advantage on points in the paint. Both teams shot just over 41 percent from the field for the contest.

The Muskies held a 43-39 lead at halftime after shooting 48.5 percent and draining six 3-pointers in the first period. They held the lead for the final 14:38 of the half and extended their advantage to 10 at one point.

Northland extended its lead to as many as seven in the second before Lakeland inched back into the game. The Muskies tied it at 65-65 at the 5:27 mark following a tip-in by sophomore forward Germell Heard (Milwaukee, Wis.).

After attempting no free throws in the first half, Northland converted 11-of-13 from the charity stripe in the second.

Regal (Suring, Wis.) ended the game with 12 points, including four 3-pointers, four assists and five steals.

Lakeland concludes its regular season non-conference schedule with a 3-5 record. The team resumes NAC play this Wednesday at Marian at 7 p.m.
