SHEBOYGAN - In a back-and-forth battle, it was Khendal Andrews and the Lakeland men's basketball team who dealt the final knockout blow.
In front of a boisterous crowd at Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium, the Muskies (7-8 overall, 4-3 NAC) snapped their three-game losing streak, defeating North Division rival Concordia, Wis., 72-68 on Tuesday in a Northern Athletics Conference showdown.
In a game with 11 lead changes, including eight in the second half, Andrews, a senior guard, nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to give Lakeland a 66-61 advantage with 1:32 remaining. The jumpers sent the crowd into a frenzy, forcing a CUW timeout and allowing Lakeland to gain all momentum.
"I told our guys that most conference games would be two-possession games at all times," Lakeland coach Aaron Aanonsen said. "That statement has held true all year. Every timeout we preached rebounding, and we got them late in the game. Khendal made some huge shots to help us get the win."
The Falcons (7-8, 4-4) answered on the ensuing possession with a layup by Tyler Granrath, but the Muskies knocked down 6-of-6 from the line down the stretch to seal the victory.
Lakeland shot 61 percent in the second half and 51 percent for the contest to offset 14 offensive rebounds and 23 second-chance points for the Falcons.
The Muskies used a combination of man and zone defense to keep Concordia at bay for a majority of the game. The Falcons shot 41.3 percent in the game and made only 4-for-16 (25 percent) from beyond the arc after the half.
"We added a few wrinkles in our man and zone defenses," Aanonsen said. "Some games we've gotten torched, but we kept them off-balance for the most part tonight."
Lakeland took a 21-13 lead, its biggest of the first half, at the 9:07 mark. However, Concordia chipped away, tying the game with 4:08 to play in the half. The teams traded buckets and the game was tied, 30-30, heading into the locker room.
Andrews (Kankakee, Ill.) finished with 16 points, including four 3-pointers, and seven rebounds. Sophomore forward Jake Schwarz (Sheboygan, Wis.) finished with a team-high 21 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Josh Regal (Suring, Wis.) added 17 points and five assists.
The Muskies shot 9-for-22 (41 percent) from 3-point range and 13-of-16 (81 percent) from the free-throw line in the game.
Lakeland saw its largest crowd of the season in attendance as students, staff, faculty, family and friends suited up in white apparel to create a "white-out" effect.
"That was the best crowd I've seen in my four years here," Aanonsen said. "We played a lot of guys a lot of minutes, so our fans helped them get some energy and adrenaline to finish ... that win goes to the fans."
Lakeland continues its home stand Thursday, Jan. 21, against Rockford at 7 p.m.
