Softball struggles continue in desert
Athletics - posted on 3/18/2010
The Lakeland College softball team's struggles continued for the second consecutive day as the Muskies dropped a 6-2 decision to in-state rival Wisconsin-La Crosse before losing the second of three meetings this week against Augsburg 11-7 in the squad's fourth day of competition at the 2010 Tucson Invitational Games.
Lakeland (4-4) gave up runs in multiple innings in the four-run defeat to UW-La Crosse. "We took too many strike outs and gave up runs in too many innings," Lakeland coach Chad Buchmann said. Senior Sara Roberts was saddled with her second loss in two games.
After finding themselves in a 9-0 hole against Augsburg, the Muskies rallied with six runs in the fourth inning and trailed just 9-6 going into the seventh inning. Augsburg added two runs in the top half of the inning, and Lakeland was able to tally just a single run in the bottom half as it suffered its fourth consecutive loss after a 4-0 start to the season.
"We have to work on our consistency," Buchmann said. "Right now when we're on, we're decent, but when we're off we are really struggling."
Lakeland wraps up its seven day stay in Tucson Friday night with games against Otterbein and North Central starting at 8 p.m. CST.
