The Lakeland College softball team wrapped up its 2010 Northern Athletics Conference season with a pair of dominating 12-0 and 19-4 victories Saturday afternoon against MSOE in Milwaukee, Wis.
Chelsea Coenen and Jenny LaLuzerne combined for four triples on the day as the Muskies finish the season with 32 triples, breaking the single-season mark of 30 set by last year's squad. Coenen, ranked second in the nation as of April 25 with 10 triples, hit three in the doubleheader to increase her total to 14.
Coenen led the Lakeland (24-16, 17-7) offense in game one, scoring four runs and driving in two with two hits. She homered for the fifth time this season with two outs and no one on base in the top of the fifth inning.
KC Blahnik also homered for the Muskies in the opener, leading off the top of the third inning with her fourth blast of the season.
Sara Roberts picked up the victory, tossing seven innings of shutout ball. She allowed just two hits and walked one while striking out six. She also led Lakeland with three RBI.
In game two, Lakeland's first eight batters reached in the top of the first inning as the Muskies pieced together four hits, two walks and two errors to jump out to an 11-0 lead.
Coenen was 3-3 with four RBI and three runs scored as she finished the day a perfect 5-5 at the plate on the day. LaLuzerne and Sam Shepeck were each 3-4 as seven different players scored at least twice and six players drove in two or more runs.
Lakeland heads into the 2010 NAC Softball Tournament currently in third place in the NAC with a 17-7 record. The Muskies will wrap up the three seed for next weekend's tournament with a loss by Dominican in the Stars' doubleheader against Concordia Wisconsin on Sunday.
"We've shown that we can play with the top two teams this season, but we need to be consistent at the plate," Lakeland head coach Chad Buchmann said. "We need to be able to put the ball in play one through nine in the lineup. We have a week to get ready and it's a game-by-game situation now."
