Women's volleyball enters crucial week in conference play

Athletics - posted on 10/19/2009

The Lakeland women's volleyball team enters a vital Northern Athletics Conference stretch this week with three matches against league opponents.

The Muskies (15-10, 7-2 NAC) currently sit tied for second in the conference standings, one game behind first-place Benedictine, which is 8-1 in NAC play. If Lakeland wins out, it is guaranteed at least a share of the conference regular season title. However, three Muskie victories do not guarantee the top seed in the NAC Tournament.

Lakeland, which has earned the No. 1 seed the last two years, can only get its third straight top seed if it wins out and both Dominican and Concordia, Wis., lose a match.

Dominican, which beat Lakeland in four sets on Oct. 9, plays at Edgewood and Maranatha Baptist, and concludes the regular season at home against Wisconsin Lutheran.

Concordia, Wis., snapped the Muskies' 35-match conference winning streak in regular season and tournament play on Oct. 6 with a four-set win over visiting Lakeland. The Falcons have road matches against Edgewood, Wisconsin Lutheran and Marian, and a home contest with Rockford remaining on their regular season slate.

If Dominican, CUW and Lakeland all win out, the Muskies would be the fourth seed in the tournament and would be only guaranteed a home match in the first round.

If Lakeland defeats Marian tomorrow night in Fond du Lac, Wis., it will clinch a NAC Tournament berth. Beyond that, the team's seed will be determined by the matches played out in the next week and a half.

The only way Lakeland would get nudged out of the NAC tournament is if it loses the rest of its matches and Marian wins out.

The Muskies host Aurora, which is currently a half game behind Lakeland, this Friday at 7 p.m. The team will then welcome Benedictine on Saturday for a 12 p.m. contest.

Lakeland has not lost a regular season conference match at home since Sept. 26, 2000, when it was defeated by Marian in three sets.

Saturday's match also marks Senior Day, which will celebrate the careers of seniors Hannah Ellis, Kaylyn Kasper, Kim Linger, Heather Mayer, Brittanie Paulus and Tonia Strebelinski.
